The Western Buddhist Teachers Conference with H.H. the Dalai Lama (2 of 8)

When earnest, educated, Western Buddhists tried and tried and tried in 1993 to get the Dalai Lama's help in creating a code of ethics for Tibetan Buddhist teachers and the Dalai Lama just repeatedly danced around the subject, got a lot of laughs but basically said the only thing to do was it was up to the victims to create a scandal about the abuser.
Zero was said by him about how harmful, traumatizing it was to be sexually abused by one's most trusted spiritual guide. How people had been murdered by these so-called spiritual guides (Tom Rich), committed suicide, been ostracized by their former sangha 'sisters' and 'brothers' for outing the abuses by any lama or Tibetan Buddhist teacher. Nothing. Mr. Avatar of Compassion giggled his way through this discussion.

In March 1993 a group of teachers representing different traditions from several countries met with H.H. the Dalai Lama for a four day conference concerning the transmission and development of Dharma in the west. This historic event consists of formal presentations to His Holiness, his response and ensuing discussions. The full unabridged conference of 16 hours over four days and eight sessions: 1) Teachers and Training, 2) Teachers & Ethics, 3) Authenticity & Adaptation, 4) Sectarianism & Over-adaptation, 5) Psychotherapy & Dharma, 6) Women in Buddhism, 7) Monasticism, 8) Conclusion and Open Letter . Also available on audio.
